Backstory in Balham is crowned London's best independent bookshop

Balham High Road is home to a bookshop that has just been named the best in London. Backstory was crowned London's Independent Bookshop of the Year in the 2026 British Book Awards, run by trade magazine The Bookseller, finally taking the title after being shortlisted for three years running.

The shop was founded by Tom Rowley, a former journalist who left The Economist to open his own independent bookshop. Backstory opened its doors in October 2022, and it has quickly become far more than a place to buy books. Time Out describes it as a community hub for locals.

The name explains the philosophy. Backstory says it is all about "celebrating the story behind each story", and the shop's events and recommendations aim to bring readers closer to the people and ideas behind the books on its shelves.

A long bar with comfortable chairs runs along one side of the shop, and customers are invited to "linger over a coffee or a glass of wine" as they browse. It is a simple idea that has made the shop a natural meeting place, especially on Thursday and Friday evenings when it stays open until 9pm.

Events are a big part of life at Backstory. The shop hosts author talks most weeks, as well as regular live music nights. It also runs two monthly book clubs on Zoom, one for fiction and one for non fiction, so that readers outside London can join in, and the author of each chosen book joins the discussion.

The award puts Backstory among the nine regional and national winners in this year's Independent Bookshop of the Year competition, which The Bookseller's deputy editor described as a "record year for submissions". It is a fine result for a young business in a tough market, and a reminder of how much a good local bookshop can mean to a neighbourhood.

For Balham residents, it means bragging rights. For everyone else, it is a very good reason to hop on the Northern line.
