Bara brings Welsh sandwiches and bara brith to Choumert Road in Peckham

Peckham gained a little taste of Wales this year with the arrival of Bara, a café and sandwich shop at 44 to 46 Choumert Road. The name is the Welsh word for bread, and it opened its doors on 12 February 2026.
Bara is run by friends Zoë Heimann and Cecily Dalladay. Cecily is a private chef who reached the quarter finals of MasterChef: The Professionals, and together the pair have built a menu around produce sourced from Wales.
That sourcing shows up all over the menu. Leeks come from Blas Y Tir, cockles, brown crab and lobster from Câr-y-Môr, and Purple Moose beer goes into the rarebit. Time Out noted that the café took inspiration from a 1950s Welsh Gas Board cookbook.
The signature Swansea Breakfast brings together smoked bacon, leeks, cockles and laverbread on toasted focaccia. Focaccia is the backbone of the weekday offer, with fillings including slow cooked Welsh lamb shoulder with harissa, yoghurt and dill dressed cucumber, saffron coronation chicken with charred pineapple and scotch bonnet salsa, and a brown crab rarebit made with Caerphilly cheese.
On Saturdays there is a Pembrokeshire lobster roll, with poached lobster, lobster bisque mayonnaise, chives and lemon in a soft sesame roll. There is also a Caerphilly cheesesteak, filled with beef brisket and caramelised onions.
Baking matters too. Bara makes its own bara brith, the Welsh fruit tea loaf, which arrives toasted with butter, and there is a Bara Bun, a cinnamon bun spiced with tea.
Early reviews have been warm. The Infatuation described it as feeling like "a beloved neighbourhood canteen", busy with parents, toddlers and laptop users, with yellow wall sconces and small tables giving the room a cosy feel. It lists the café as good for breakfast, lunch, children, dogs and vegetarians.
It is an easy addition to a weekend wander around Peckham, with Choumert Road just off Rye Lane. Sandwiches can be taken away as well as eaten in.
