Camden Market's Saturday vintage market brings rails of retro fashion to NW1

Few places in London are as closely tied to fashion and subculture as Camden Market. For more than half a century it has been a place to find clothes that stand out, and this autumn its Saturday vintage market is giving shoppers even more reason to visit.
The market's story began on 30 March 1974, when a small weekly crafts market started near Camden Lock. "It all started with 16 stalls," the market says, and from those humble, temporary beginnings it has grown into one of London's best known destinations.
Today the site has more than 1,000 shops, stalls, bars and cafés. It is made up of several distinct areas. Camden Lock is known for its canal side barges and cobbled market stalls, while the Stables Market, set in historic former stables, is described as a warren of cultures and subcultures, home to global and local brands alike. North Yard brings together independent north London restaurants, and Hawley Wharf offers canal side space for eating, shopping and experiences.
Fashion runs through all of it. Clothing stalls are found across the markets, and the Stables has long been a hub for second hand goods and alternative styles, from 20th century antiques to goth and cyber fashion.
For vintage lovers, the Camden Vintage Market, run with Bootyfull Car Boot, takes place every Saturday through October and November, featuring vintage fashion, vinyl and homewares. It is a great way to hunt for one off pieces while soaking up the atmosphere of the canal.
The market has a musical heritage too, and Camden's venues have hosted acts including The Clash and Blondie.
The markets draw roughly 250,000 people a week, making them one of London's most popular visitor attractions. With so much to explore, it is worth setting aside a few hours, and arriving early on a Saturday to get first pick of the vintage stalls.
Camden Market is beside Camden Lock, a short walk from Camden Town and Chalk Farm stations. For opening times, events and the vintage market, visit camdenmarket.com.
