Canteen in Notting Hill serves fresh pasta at the top of Portobello Road

At the northern end of Portobello Road, where it meets Golborne Road, Canteen has turned a well known corner into one of west London's most enjoyable places for an Italian lunch. In February 2026 it was named among London's new Michelin Bib Gourmands.

Canteen comes from the Public House group, led by Phil Winser and James Gummer, who also run The Pelican gastropub nearby, The Hero in Maida Vale and The Bull in Charlbury, Oxfordshire. Hot Dinners summed up the restaurant as "great Italian food" from the team behind The Hero and The Pelican.

It opened in October 2024 in the ground floor space that was previously Pizza East. Harden's described the launch as "sotto voce", a deliberately low key unveiling, with no website and seats kept for walk in customers.

The kitchen was set up by former River Café chefs, with Jessica Filbey leading, and Max Haughton running day to day operations at launch. The approach is informal: fresh pasta and daily changing larger plates, in the spirit of a good Italian trattoria.

Dishes from the opening weeks gave a flavour of the style. There was tomato pappardelle with pecorino, cavolo nero risotto, pizzette topped with mortadella, ricotta and lemon or with gorgonzola and fig, gnocchi with duck ragù, and a cherry frangipane tart to finish.

Because the menu changes every day, Canteen posts it on Instagram, where diners can check what is cooking before they head over. It is a good fit for the neighbourhood, close to the Golborne Road market stalls and the antique and vintage shops of Portobello. Upstairs, the group planned a pub called the Fat Badger, adding another reason to visit this corner of W10.

The Bib Gourmand, which recognises restaurants offering excellent value for the quality of their cooking, is a fine result for a place that set out to be a simple, generous neighbourhood canteen.
