Goddards at Greenwich has served pie and mash by the market since 1890

Few London meals carry as much history as pie, mash and liquor, and few places serve it with as much heritage as Goddards at Greenwich. The family-run shop has been serving pie and mash since 1890, and it says its recipes have not changed since it started.
You will find Goddards at 22 King William Walk, on the corner of Greenwich Market, which makes it a natural stop for anyone exploring the riverside, the Cutty Sark or the market stalls. The shopfront still proudly reads "Est 1890".
The traditional order is a minced beef pie with mash and liquor, finished with a splash of chilli vinegar. Pies are handmade and baked fresh daily, using locally sourced ingredients and British meat, and they are served throughout the day.
The menu has moved with the times without losing its roots. Alongside the classic beef there are steak, chicken, lamb, vegetarian and vegan pies, and Time Out has noted that lamb and rosemary has become so popular it now overtakes minced beef. Gluten free pies are available too, and eels are still on the menu for traditionalists, whether jellied or stewed.
Puddings are part of the ritual. Handmade fruit crumble or fruit pie comes with ice cream or custard, and bread and butter pudding or sponge pudding sometimes appears as well.
Service is simple and old school. You order at the counter and carry your food to your table, and the dining room seats up to 100 people, so it works for groups and families as well as solo lunches. Goddards also caters for evening meals and has hosted wedding receptions.
Visit Greenwich, the borough's official visitor organisation, lists Goddards as a Visit Greenwich Partner for 2026, a sign of how firmly it sits in the area's food story. For those who cannot make it in person, pies can also be ordered through delivery apps.
