Tucked away on Bathurst Mews, a short walk from Lancaster Gate, horses still clip clop over the cobbles just as they have for centuries. Hyde Park Stables is one of the last standing mews with horses in central London, and it offers one of the city's most unexpected ways to explore a royal park.

Hyde Park has been one of England's most famous equestrian venues for more than 300 years, and the stables keep that tradition alive. Riders head out through the park and alongside the Serpentine, always escorted by experienced instructors.

The stables' future was secured in 2018. When the previous owner, Mr Briggs, retired, Ellie Hall McAteer took over rather than see the stables go to developers. Horses have always been part of her life: her parents work in the equestrian industry, and her sister Jodie Hall McAteer competes on the international show jumping circuit. Ellie's aim is to make riding more accessible to Londoners, and she spends her downtime at the family's show jumping farm north of London.

The stables cater for adults and children aged four and over, and welcome riders of every level, from experienced show jumpers to people who have never been near a horse. Beginners usually start with lesson rides through the park before moving into the outdoor arena for more advanced work.

Safety comes first. Everyone starts on the lead rein until their ability is assessed, with novices staying on the lead rein while more experienced riders may ride independently. Riders are asked to describe their experience honestly so they can be matched with a suitable horse.

The setting is hard to beat. On an autumn morning, with the leaves turning and the park quiet, there are few better ways to see Hyde Park than from the saddle.

It is a reminder that, even in the middle of a modern city, some traditions are worth holding on to.
